Master Sergeant Gary Ivan Gordon was a member of the United States Army's 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (Delta Force). He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Mogadishu on October 3, 1993. Gordon, along with Sergeant First Class Randall Shughart, volunteered to be inserted on the ground to protect the crew of a downed Black Hawk helicopter, despite knowing the overwhelming enemy presence. Both Gordon and Shughart were killed in the action, but their bravery and self-sacrifice were credited with saving the life of the helicopter's pilot, Chief Warrant Officer Mike Durant. Their heroism and dedication to their comrades became widely known and respected, symbolizing the selfless and courageous ethos of the Special Operations community.
